my thing about collections ~ November 9, 2001 - 11:31 p.m.

you know what I realized yesterday? I've had this diary now for over a year. the anniversary passed me by a few days ago. that's pretty good for an aquarian chick who can't seem to sustain an interest in most things for more than three months.

like my thing with collections: ever since I was a kid, I've liked the idea of collecting things. I had a stamp album for a while, and that was pretty fun, but it wasn't even full when I lost interest.

I like the idea of collections, I just have trouble putting any real energy into it for any length of time.

in high school, my best friend heather and I started collecting scrap metal that we found on the street. it was really pretty cool-- you find all kinds of weird funky little metal bits if you pay attention to the sidewalk beneath your feet. it got to where, if we both saw something cool at the same time, we'd dive for it. we cracked our skulls together a couple of times that way.

then, at some point, I started collecting religious medals that I found in thrift store junk bins, and making earrings out of them. let me mention that I have almost -no- religious background to speak of. I mean-- we went to the unitarian church until I was, six or seven, or something. the not really a religion religion.

so I thought the medals were cool and weird because I had no religious baggage. my favorite one was a st. jude medal-- I wore that earring all the time. and then, at some point, I found out that st. jude is the patron saint of hopeless causes, and I thought it was hilarious. because I was, definitely, in high school, a hopeless cause.

which leads me to the collection which I still claim to have today.

st. jude paraphernalia.

I'll mention this sometimes, the fact that I collect st. jude paraphernalia-- and sometimes I will or will not mention what that collection consists of:

two (count 'em, TWO) candles. total.

see, the thing is, my life doesn't often take me into the circles where one might often encounter st. jude paraphernalia. mainly I see candles when I'm in a drugstore or grocery store somewere in california, and often they are one of the two designs which I already have. and while I would love to have more of this stuff, I don't quite want it badly enough to go looking for it.

so, my thing about collections. is somehow meant to imply that it's impressive that I've maintained an interest in this diary for so long. which it is.

and it's been good for my writing, too-- writing for public consumption on a regular basis. you never know what's going to come out of your head.
