guru purunima and the hanuman olympics ~ July 24, 2002 - 10:14 p.m.

today was a great day. I had all kinds of fun.

today we celebrated guru purunima-- a yearly holiday where an entire community gathers to celebrate their guru.

we had a devotional ceremony this morning, a yajna, which is a ritual done on the full moon. singing, mantras, offerings, fire puja. it was beautiful. at the end, there's music and sweets passed around and it becomes a big party.

in the afternoon, we had the hanuman olympics-- a yearly event here. very fun, very goofy. since guru purunima is about celebrating the guru, and since baba hari dass, the guru here, is all about lightheartedness and play, we celebrate the guru by playing together as a community. so much fun. kids running everywhere and all kinds of goofiness.

there were inflatable sumo wrestling suits. you'd have to see them to believe them-- I haven't laughed so hard in a while. and a dunk tank, and snow cones, and all kinds of events and games.

I very nearly won the women's arm wrestling. I beat everyone I went up against-- until nicole. she and I were really well-matched-- we were at a standstill for a -while-, until I got tired enough to give in. she's a tough yoga mama.

and I got knocked down in the sack fight (like a sack race, except you're trying to knock each other down), and climbed across the lake (really, it's pond, but we call it a lake) on ropes, and swam and wrestled and backflipped and laughed and laughed and laughed.

a gorgeous day, filled with sunshine and friends and silliness.

exactly what I needed.
