...the ones I love best...

the bright side of life ~ July 15, 2003 - 6:27 p.m.

I had a deeply frustrating morning at the international clinic at mahosot hospital, where I will probably never go again for medical care if I can help it.

the doctor I talked to yesterday told me that I could come at 8 in the morning and be done in twenty minutes, in time to get me to work by nine.

I didn't make it there until 8:20. I didn't get to leave until after 10. I tried to call work and got a weird recording. it turns out the phones at the school were down.

there was all this runaround, and it turned out they couldn't do half the tests I wanted, even though the doctor the day before said they could.

when I told them I wanted an HIV test, they acted funny. a nurse opened a book that said HIV on the cover and made a phone call. then they told me I'd have to go to this other place for that. then they drew my blood to test for hepatitis and some other stuff.

I left and went out to the place they told me to go, and the gate was chained. but then I realized what the sign said, and realized that there was no freakin' way I'd go there for an HIV test.

the sign said: National Committee for the Control of AIDS

no way in hell you want to get an HIV test done at a government agency in a communist country.

when I went back to the hospital for my test results (no hep! hooray!), they asked about the HIV and I told them I decided I didn't need it.

then this evening I went to the little gyno clinic close to my house for the STD tests I wanted. decided to hold off on the HIV until after I get those results. but I've been tested at the gyno clinic before, and they assure me that the results are kept confidential.

everything's probably fine. it's just, you know-- I've been sick. wanting to rule everything out. I'll get my results tomorrow.

on the plus side, I took some material down to a tailor by my house to get a skirt made, and it turns out she's the mother of one of my students, so she's doing it dirt cheap for me. hooray!

(insert that monty python song about look on the briiiight siiide of life!)
