...the ones I love best...

tales of a fourth grade teacher ~ February 19, 2003 - 8:16 a.m.

I am just loving teaching the fourth grade, I really am.

my kids are sweet, and funny, and undisciplined, and I love them tremendously. of course it's a challenge sometimes, getting the message across to a roomful of kids for whom english is not their first language, but it's really great in a whole lot of ways. I'm getting into the swing of it.

I finally know all of their names, which cover a whole range from Ruth to Bouanang.

one of the biggest challenges is getting them to think creatively. they're used to being given things to copy, filling in the blanks on worksheets. I'm doing my best to challenge them without leaving them behind.

I'm also having fun with Gift, the director's daughter, who I tutor in english three nights a week. she's silly and curious and a little shy. her mother, ma'am bay, cooks me amazing vegetarian dinners to take home on nights I work with her.

I'm still having some pain from the weird sciatic thang, but when I woke up this morning, I was just a little sore. I think I'm moving through it.

and it helps that I am just loving my life.
