the big flashy shiny genocide machine... ~ 2001-02-03 - 19:11:15

I slept myself out today, for the first time in weeks... I woke up when my sister called to set up a date for us to go gambling tonight. we have a tradition-- whenever I'm in town we go out to potawatomi bingo... it's one of those indian gaming casinos. they're constantly feeding more money back into it, so it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. when we first went, a few years ago, it was just a big, bright smokey room. then they added slot machines... now, they've got blackjack tables and everything, and from the look of the commercials, it's pretty fancy. they're bringing in big-name music, too-- b.b. king, beausoleil...

no, I don't know how I feel about indian casinos. on the one hand, I'm glad the tribes have found a way to bring in money. on the other hand, considering how native cultures have had to struggle with addictions, it seems like just another shiny, flashy extension of the genocide machine. although, from what I can see, it's mainly white folks who go there and throw their money away. white folks like me and my sister. what can I say, it's a tradition. one of the only ones we've got.

my sister also called to see if I would set it up so our folks could babysit her kids on monday night, and I could go with her to have her cat put to sleep. she took him to the vet last week, and when the vet suggested putting him down, she freaked out and burst into tears and asked if there wasn't something else they could try. so he put miles on amoxicillin, but it doesn't seem to be doing much good... the vet thinks it's kidney failure. miles is so sick, and he keeps trying to get outside, even though it's the dead of winter. she thinks he's trying to escape so he can die on his own. she knows it's time, but it's really hard. she's had miles longer than she's had her kids... she adopted him when she lived in eugene, oregon, rescued him from the heroin addicts who lived in the trailer park next door. he's smart and sweet and loving... he likes to knead his paws in people's hair. when my hair's long, it's his favorite. I used to ride a motor scooter, and when he heard it coming down the road, he'd run to the door.

so on monday my folks are going to watch the kids so that I can go with my sister to the vet and be there with her when she has him put down. it's hard. it's really hard to let go.
