what I'm reading now ~ January 16, 2002 - 1:41 a.m.

my days in san jose are kind of a blur.

I'm reading like I did when I was a kid, devouring book after book, staying in bed for hours after I wake up and before I go to sleep. comfort reading.

what I have I read lately? the best was "the fifth sacred thing" by starhawk. yes, you should read it too. it was beautiful, and speaks to the visions of the future I keep having. both the dreams and nightmares. the struggle with violence vs. nonviolence, compassion vs. vengeance. read this book.

I keep meaning to add a reading list to this diary, where I can share what I've been reading and how I feel about it. 'cause, hell, I'm always looking for good books to read, and I'm sure that other people are too.

I also re-read a bunch of "the dragonriders of pern" books by anne mccaffery. I read those books over and over again when I was a kid. such a comfort to revisit that world. such a lovely escape. and I hadn't realized how many more she's written since I grew up. now I'm thinking I have to start tracking them down. I think I have about five to catch up on.

and I re-read "the handmaid's tale", margaret atwood. she's one of my all-time favorite novelists. "cat's eye" is a masterpiece. "the handmaid's tale" is a little eerie, set against the world we're living in today. at first, they blamed it on the Islamic fundamentalists...

I just got back from the bookstore with another anne mccaffery, "crystal line", the third crystal singer book, so that's what I'm reading now. I also bought "parable of the talents", by octavia butler, which I've been looking for, the sequel to "parable of the sower". butler rocks my world. gorgeous writing and heartstopping metaphors, set in yet another future that's all to easy to envision.

and I just bought "virtual light", by william gibson, as well. I just discovered gibson, although people have been telling me to read him for years. I'm really just now revisiting science fiction, after being away from it for many years. so much of it is well-envisioned and well-rendered-- but without poetry, without the truly artful use of words. gibson has it all. I finished the "neuromancer" books over christmas, now I think I'm going to have to work my way through everything he's ever written.

is that more than you ever wanted to know about what I'm reading right now? well, it made nice little diversion. much better than the dreary truth of the fact that today was not much different from yesterday.

a little better, maybe.
