work stuff ~ July 9, 2003 - 7:37 p.m.

I started my new evening job today. I've got three classes a week, an hour and fifty minutes apiece. hopefully by the time my day job finishes at the end of july, I'll have a new day job lined up, or my hours at the evening job will increase. either one is a good possibility, so I think it'll all come together.

I've got the english level fours, which means they understand pretty well. they're all teenagers so far, which is fun for me. only five kids today, but I've got more on my class list, and friday's class will probably be bigger.

they were kinda quiet, but it went well. the materials are good, but I'll have to work at livening it up a bit. listening to conversations and answering questions about them gets old after a while.

the school is new, and the classrooms are brand-spankin'. I wrote on a whiteboard that had never been written on before. kinda that new-fallen snow feeling. the materials are designed for asians learning ESL, so they're pretty right on. explain western concepts when they need to. teacher's notes to make the whole thing easy. gotta dig it.

especially after spending nearly six months at a school where we have to improvise everything, with very little in the way of appropriate resources to work with.

the bosses at the day job just get worse and worse. monday I had to call in because of one of the random fevers I've been getting. so bad, on monday, that I couldn't sit up in bed without dripping sweat. I nearly lost my job for calling in.

this, in spite of the fact that I haven't even used up all my sick days. one of the lao teachers had malaria all last week, but no one accused him of lying about it.

just sick of the place. but it's nearly over.

and I can live on just my night job, if I need to. not richly, not in the style to which I've become accustomed, but I can live on it. on roughly five hours a week. that amazes me.

blah, blah, blah. work stuff. that's what's going on with me right now.

previously... * and then...
